We have run all of these, more than once. Every route below has its own page with a map, practical notes and a GPX file you can load onto your watch. Here is how to choose.
Best short runs (3–6 km)
Kaivopuisto Waterfront, 5.2 km. The quintessential Helsinki run. From Market Square along the harbour to the open-sea shore of Kaivopuisto, then back through the park. If you are staying in the centre and have forty minutes, do this.
Töölönlahti Bay Loop, 3.5 km. A flat, sheltered lap around the bay behind the Central Station, past Oodi, Finlandia Hall and the Opera. Perfect for easy runs, strides and pre-race shakeouts.
Suomenlinna Fortress, 4 km. Take the ferry from Market Square and run the ramparts of a UNESCO-listed sea fortress. Uneven and hilly in places, but unforgettable.
Kallio & Linnunlaulu, 5.6 km. A neighbourhood run through Kallio and Vallila, for when you want to see where people actually live.
Best 10K routes
South Helsinki Shoreline, 9.5 km. Our most recommended route. Sea on one side almost the whole way, through Kaivopuisto, Eira and Hernesaari and back via Hietalahti. Flat and fast.
Vanhankaupunginlahti Nature Run, 9.8 km. Rapids, reed beds and birdlife in the nature reserve where Helsinki was founded. Quiet and flat, on good gravel paths.
City Landmarks Run, 6.9 km. A sightseeing tour: Senate Square, Uspenski Cathedral, the Esplanadi, Temppeliaukio Church and the Parliament. Best early on a weekend morning.
Best long runs (12–20 km)
Seurasaari & Sibelius Park, 12.7 km. West Helsinki's shoreline, the Sibelius Monument and the forest paths of Seurasaari island. Gentle, green and beautiful in every season.
Lauttasaari Island Loop, 13 km. Circle an entire island on shoreline paths, with rocky forest and open-sea views.
Katajanokka to Mustikkamaa, 13.4 km. The changing eastern harbour, from Jugend Katajanokka to the new Kalasatama waterfront and out to the island of Mustikkamaa.
Central Park Trail, 15.7 km. Deep into Keskuspuisto on soft gravel and forest paths, sheltered from the wind. The local long-run classic.
Helsinki Grand Tour, 19.8 km. Nearly the whole shoreline of the peninsula in one run. Add a Töölönlahti lap for a full half marathon.
Best forest and trail runs
For soft ground, head to Paloheinä or Central Park. For true wilderness, see our trail running guide, which covers Nuuksio National Park and Sipoonkorpi.
Choosing by weather
The biggest variable in Helsinki is wind. On a blustery day the waterfront can be hard work, and the forest routes feel ten degrees warmer. Our Find My Run tool shows current running conditions next to its recommendation, so you can decide before you lace up.
Using the GPX files
Every route page has a Download GPX button. Import the file into your watch app (Garmin Connect, Coros, Suunto, Polar), or into a phone app such as Komoot or Strava, and follow the line. The routes are drawn from OpenStreetMap footpaths. Paths change, so use your judgement where there is construction.
