A neighbourhood run through Kallio and Vallila with a couple of honest hills and a bay finish.
This is the Helsinki most visitors miss. Starting at Hakaniemi market hall, the route climbs to Kallio church, whose granite tower you can see from across the city, and continues through the grid of Kallio and into the wooden and brick courtyards of Vallila.
The return swings past Alppipuisto and Linnanmäki amusement park before dropping to the Eläintarhanlahti shore and back to Hakaniemi along the water.
Expect traffic lights, cafés, bakeries and a couple of short, steep climbs. It is a city run, not a time trial.
Highlights
- Kallio church
- Vallila residential streets
- Alppipuisto park
- Eläintarhanlahti shoreline
Practical notes
- Several traffic-light crossings, so it is not ideal for pace work.
- Pavements can be icy in winter; main streets are gritted first.
Getting to the start
Hakaniemi metro station. Trams 3, 6, 7 and 9.
