Run the ramparts of a UNESCO-listed sea fortress, a 15-minute ferry ride from Market Square.

Suomenlinna is an 18th-century sea fortress spread over several linked islands at the mouth of Helsinki harbour, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the most memorable short runs in Europe.

From the ferry pier the route follows the main path south across the islands, past the church that doubles as a lighthouse, to the King's Gate and the cannons and ramparts of Kustaanmiekka at the southern tip, facing the open Baltic. The return takes the western side, over grassy bastions and along the shore.

The surfaces change constantly, from gravel and cobbles to grass and short, steep ramps, so treat it as an adventure run rather than a fast one.

Highlights

  • Suomenlinna church and lighthouse
  • King's Gate
  • Kustaanmiekka ramparts facing the open sea
  • Ferry ride across the harbour

Practical notes

  • Residents live on the islands, so be respectful in the courtyards.
  • Uneven cobbles: watch your footing.
  • Check the last return ferry in the evening.
