Summer running and the midnight sun

From late May to mid-August Helsinki barely gets dark. The sea warms up, the islands open and the whole city moves outdoors. It is the season for long evening runs that end in a swim.

White nights

Around midsummer the sun sets close to 11 pm and rises again before 4 am, and in between the sky only dims to a deep blue. Running at 10 pm in full light is completely normal. So is meeting other runners at midnight on the waterfront. Use it: evening runs avoid the midday warmth and the city is wonderfully calm.

One practical note: if you are sensitive to light, bring an eye mask. Many Finnish bedrooms have blackout curtains for exactly this reason.

Run to a swim

Helsinki's shoreline is dotted with public beaches and swimming spots, and in July and August the sea is usually warm enough for a proper swim. Classic combinations:

The public saunas on the waterfront make the perfect finish in any season.

Island runs

Summer is the time to explore by ferry. Suomenlinna runs year-round, and in summer more islands open up with seasonal ferries from the Market Square and Kaivopuisto shore. Our Suomenlinna route is the easiest start. Check HSL and ferry operators for seasonal timetables.

Hot days

Helsinki summers are generally mild, but heatwaves above 25–30 °C happen most years, and Finns are not used to them. On hot days:

  • Run before 9 am or after 7 pm.
  • Choose shaded forest routes such as Central Park, or the sea breeze of the southern shoreline.
  • Carry water. Public drinking fountains are not everywhere, but kiosks and cafés along the shore are open all summer.
  • Use sunscreen: the long days add up.

Summer events

The race calendar is busy: the Helsinki Half Marathon in June and the Helsinki Marathon in August, plus smaller runs almost every weekend. See all upcoming events.

Busy paths

The flip side of summer is that everyone is outside. Seafront paths around Kaivopuisto and Töölönlahti get crowded on sunny afternoons, with walkers, cyclists, scooters and picnics. Go early, keep right and save fast sessions for quieter routes.
